Automake 1.10 "make check" created 519 errors

I'm an AutoTools newbie; I may be doing something idiotic.
I ran configure and make with no switches and got no errors.

This is the platform I was running on:
dev:~/downloads/automake-1.10 $ uname -a
SunOS dev 5.8 Generic_117350-46 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-i2 Solaris

The legacy automake and autoconf are both version 1.9.

Let me know if there's any info you need or anything I can help you
with (e.g., testing).
