Thanks.  The issue was simpler than I expected:

| gcj: libgcj.spec: No such file or directory

Your gcj installation is broken.  Searching the net for this error
message reveals more than one possible issue, and that error is not
related to Automake.  I'm afraid you may have to do some research
yourself if you want your gcj working.

However, please try the patch below, it adds a check to Automake's which
should ensure that the test is SKIPped in this case.

I intend to apply to HEAD and branch-1-10 (and put you in THANKS) if it
works for you and no-one else complains.
