FWIW, automake requires ABOUT-NLS only in 'gnu' strictness mode.
So you can use the 'foreign' option (on the command line, as
argument to AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE, or listed in AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS;
see the manual for details).
