History setting broken on latest bash??

Hi, I've always loved the "set -o vi" command history mechanism. Till
recently I've always set this in my startup file. However, on recent
versions of linux if I set this in any startup file, not only does it not
work but it then prevents it from being set manually and have it work.
I read in the manual "on non-interactive shells set -o vi ...." sort of
implying this behaviour, except although startup files are non-interactive
they are designed to setup the shell for interactive use. I get a little sick
of having to type "set -o vi" everytime I log into a new machine.

Surely this is a bug? Or is there some new way of getting that behaviour
set automatically? Or is someone just trying to make it really nifty
like a dos shell whereby you have to type "doskey" to get it as well and is thus
it really is a neat new feature ;-)
