PLEASE HELP!!!

I am trying to start my G4 up in OSX and on startup I get a screen displaying 
the following:

/etc/master.passwd: No Such File or directory
Sh-2.05a#

I really don't know what this means or what I have to do.

Can you shed any light on this for me please.
