Proposed patch

Hi Pekka,

  This patch should take care of the problem, but please give it a test
  yourself just to confirm.

  I am not going to apply the patch just yet however, as I would like to
  see if anyone has any has any objections to the increase in the size of 
  the long branch stubs.
