No.  Thinking about this some more, I am convinced that it must be a linker
problem.  If simply adding --disable-reloc-section to the linker command line
makes everything work, then this indicates that it is ld and not LTO that is to
blame. :-(

I still have no real idea of what is causing the problems however.

I will keep on investigating.  Maybe something will turn up.
