Do you have other window managers installed on your machine?  From what we've
found I'm suspecting this is either a bug in ctwm or a bad interaction between
our AWT and ctwm.

Defining SYNCHRONIZE_GDK, running gdb on jamvm and breaking on gdk_x_error
should tell us exactly what the problem is.
