FWIW:

I have just tried running my Robot-based stress test with a smaller
delay between events. With Thread.sleep(50) in between calls to Robot,
the fixed JComboBox seems pretty robust. 

However, with the delay reduced to 10 msecs, I still get random crashes 
from time to time on my system (with ctwm and jamvm and classpath) - 
every few hundred iterations or so. If running in gdb, it occurs every 
few thousand iterations, with the stracktrace same as before.
The JDK survives this.

Are we sure the Gtk/Gdk stuff is race-free?  But the crashes might also
be due to my (rather ancient) kernel, pthread, and X11.
