The following command cause sort to abort:
$ LC_TIME=de_DE.ISO-8859-1 LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 sort
sort: sort.c:714: inittables_mb: Assertion `mblength != (size_t)-1 && mblength
!= (size_t)-2' failed.
Of course, the locale settings don't make much sense, but sort should not
abort in any way.
