This bug report isn't in a form where we can help you out much. We're
best able to answer questions from people who are able to compile (or have
compiled) coreutils on their own, so that if we say "Please try version
5.0.x", they'll be able to download 5.0.x and compile it.
There is probably nobody on this list who works for Columbia; we're
volunteers around the world who answer bug reports to this mailing list as
a kindness in our spare time. (I myself am only 20 miles from Columbia
physically, but that's just a coincidence.) There's no way for any of us
to know what kind of computer newcunix.cc.columbia.edu is, nor to know
what programs are installed on it, nor to know what versions of those
programs are installed on it, nor to know how user accounts are configured
on that machine by default. For all we know, you might be reading about
GNU "mv" and actually be invoking Solaris "mv" or SCO "mv". (In fact,
that is usually what is happening when we get complaints that "the
such-and-such command doesn't know about option --foo". You will have to
tell us more in order for us to be able to help you.
If you want to submit another bug report:
First figure out which version of "cp" and "mv" you're invoking. Or try
invoking them as /bin/cp and /bin/mv, so that you get past any layer of
aliases or unusual paths that may be set up for your account.
Send us the output you get from "/bin/cp --version" and "/bin/mv
--version".
Send us the command line you type, and the output you get. Best would be
if you could use cut-and-paste to cut the output from your terminal window
into your email client's compose buffer.
Explain what you think the output should be or what the command should do
differently than it does.
Sincerely Yours,

Subject: -i interactive command not working
Hi,
The interactive command for copy and move are not working (cp -i file)
and (mv -i file) but they are listed as legal commands until the help
menu. I am a student at Columbia University and connecting to
newcunix.cc.columbia.edu Is this command just not allowed?? Thanks for
your time.
-Alex
