Just an addition:
In order to make various tests succeed on a cvs checkout of
'COREUTILS-5_2_1' I had to do
#v+
touch tests/{cut,date,join,pr,tac,tail,test,tr,wc}/Test.pm
#v-
before running configure, make etc.
