I made a mistake.  This is not your fault; this is Gentoo's fault.
They put in a bunch of warnings.  Apparently, you have an environment
variable that allows standard use, but Gentoo patched it to complain
if that's set.  They probably got confused by an additional Mandrake
patch (applied before Gentoo's) which makes the absence of another
environment variable cause standard behavoir.
