dd and verbosity

I use dd in connection with nc to do network backups. I've wondered if 
there is any way that dd can be made verbose as it copies one disk to 
the other. The manual offers no such option and, reviewing additional 
information at the coreutils site, I can't find anything  helpful. Can 
dd be made verbose?
