That is interesting. I tried the exact example you gave and got:
$ printf "1\t2\t3\n" > t1
$ printf "4\t5\t6\n" > t2
$ cut -f1 t1 t2
1
That last line is a blank. I will try recompiling when I get a chance.
Maybe I should report this bug to fedora.
