Have you considered using 'rsync' for that purpose? It includes a
kitchen sink of options.
rsync --progress file1 file2

This just came up in another thread. The hostnames changed from
mail.gnu.org to lists.gnu.org. You did not say where your links
pointed. But I believe Paul just fixed the web page on www.gnu.org.
