NOTE: your shell may have its own version of pwd which will supersede
the version described here. Please refer to your shell's documentation
for details about the options it supports.
Basically just a pointer. But what else is there to say?

Ah, that explains it. I am using to seeing version numbers like this:
/bin/pwd --version
pwd (GNU coreutils) 5.3.0
And of course the built-in does not use that option.
