Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 WS

Yes. All machines were originally installed from the same system image
without any new patches.

They are using NFS (NAS filer).
There is one user who seems to have this problem more frequently than the
others. I am having him check this behaviour on a local disk. It's
difficult to tell because of the reproducibility problem. But hopefully by
tomorrow I'll have an answer whether he has got the problem also on the
local file system.

The version output is
chmod (coreutils) 4.5.3
...

The machines are identical (as far as possible).
