I had considered that, but did not have a clear idea of what to add
or where to add it... and, now that I've both thought about that
further and looked more closely, the copy of the source I have
(from Debian's 5.93 source package) does not appear to contain the
file from which sort.1 is autogenerated, at least not in any
obvious location.

The man page is generated from the --help output, I believe.

...okay, that makes things harder but not impossible. I'll see what I
can do. Would local etiquette require beginning a new thread with the
eventual patch, or would here be fine?

(On completely another subject, and quite offtopic, do you happen
to know where one would go to complain about problems arising from
mailing lists which do not set the Reply-To header to the list
address?)

That is an often-discussed topic but the basic summary is that many
people (including a number of open source projects and the sites that
host them) feel that this is a feature not a bug. See also
<http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html>. I wouldn't expect
it to be changed any time soon.

I know - I've come across it, and been given that link, before - but it
*is* causing me problems (mostly in the 'aggravating inconvenience'
category), and since I don't want to go cluttering mailing lists which
actually get things *accomplished* with that sort of offtopic discussion
I was asking where one would properly go to complain. As I more than
half expected, there probably *is* no single place to do that without
being offtopic - which largely obviates the possibility of arguing
against it without being in the position of Bad Guy from the get-go...

(I could rant for a bit about the ways in which the arguments provided
at that link don't apply in my case, but that would be doing exactly
what I've just said I don't want to do. Instead, I'll just ask how
exactly I'm supposed to make sure that one and *only* one copy of any
messages I receive from the list gets sorted into the folder in which I
keep list messages... while simultaneously making sure that any messages
which happen to have been replies to list messages but which are not
sent through the list do *not* wind up in that folder? I ordinarily
filter on the To and CC headers, preempting into the main inbox anything
where one of those matches my E-mail address and then sorting the rest
into folders depending on which list address is matched, but since at
least one of those two will always contain my E-mail address if the
Reply-To header is not used...)
