I don't get this behavior with unexpand version 5.94; I get the
behavior that you wanted.  So perhaps the bug has been fixed already,
and you merely need to upgrade.  Type "unexpand --version" to see
which version you have.  The latest stable version is at
<ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/coreutils/coreutils-5.94.tar.gz>.
If that doesn't work, please let us know.
