head and tail command

Hi,

I have found that when we do not give the count and the file name in the
head command in linux, it does not throw an error. Instead, it gives you
space to enter text and when you enter the text is copied once into that
line and further empty lines appear until we press ctrl + d.

The same thing happens in tail command too.

PFB the screenshot!

Could you please explain why this happens? Is it because the command is
in finite loop because the count and file name are mentioned?

Regards,

Subbalakshmi
