This option was removed in revision 1.128 in CVS, Sept 19 2004,
http://cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewcvs/coreutils/src/md5sum.c?rev=1.144&root=coreutils&view=log,
with a comment that 'Remove support for undocumented and
obsolete --string option, as suggested in the 1996-09-26 patch.'
