Your question is rather vague.  Often, when you don't understand how a GNU
tool works, you can do 'tty --help' for a short synopsis, then, since that
tells you that tty is part of coreutils, do 'info coreutils tty' for a
longer explanation.  For standardized applications, such as tty, you can
also look in the standards documentation, such as POSIX:
http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/tty.html

If you are having particular issues with the command, you would be better
off posting a sample command line of how you used it, what happened, and
what you expected to happen.
