Thanks for the patch, but it corrupts actual \r in file names on platforms
where \r is allowed.  This issue has been raised previously on this list;
what really needs to happen is that \r is always output encoded rather
than literally, so that reading can then discard literal \r.  I've had it
on my TODO list to implement something along those lines, but it hasn't
ever percolated to to the top.
