Very old known, and fixed, bug.  Consider upgrading; the latest stable
version is 6.12:

$ stat abcd
stat: cannot stat `abcd': No such file or directory
$ echo $?
1
$ stat --version | head -n1
stat (GNU coreutils) 6.12
