I've been reluctant to modify echo, thinking that it gets so little
use it's not worth the trouble.  And besides, it's been deprecated
in favor of printf forever.

However, if you'd like to make the change, go ahead.
Consistency can be handy, even in a deprecated tool that people
still use as much as echo.
