Before we go any further, I'd like to see some sample usage patterns you
had in mind.  How do they differ from the sparse handling already present
in cp?  And is it something where we would be better off patching cp to
handle a new option to do the behavior you want, rather than writing an
entirely new tool?  Or even better, maybe by showing us what you want
done, we can help you figure out an existing tool that already does that.
