If you are trying to understand how the tool works, a good first step
would be to read the complete manual mentioned at the bottom of the man page:

The full documentation for ls is maintained as a Texinfo manual. If
the info and ls programs are properly installed at your site, the command
info coreutils 'ls invocation'
should give you access to the complete manual.
ls --help output (from which the man page is derived) is intended solely
as a minimal quick reference.
