I first saw it in the files managed by the manpages-l10n project,
https://salsa.debian.org/manpages-l10n-team/manpages-l10n

Then I checked the most recent (if not very recent) release available
from https://www.gnu.org/software/cpio/ which is 2.13, and that also
had the character there.

I didn't check the git sources. I did now and see you fixed it a while
ago in commit 4a78d77 together with a slight rewording of the text. So
maybe a new release some time? :-)
