Because you're trying to create a patch for a binary file and CVS
doesn't support that. (You seem to have omitted the first part of the
error message, which reads: "failed to read diff file header".) The
ultimate problem is that CVS is trying to parse the diff header, but
diff just writes a brief message (something like "binary files differ")
rather than a normal diff when it encounters a binary file.
