It leads to confusion among novices about whether to type the <> characters.
Then novices should learn the meaning of <string>, exactly as they learn the meaning of [string].
See `gcc --help'. gcc is notorious for doing things their own way. I believe essentially every other package uses all caps.
Then I believe essentially every other package is inconsistent. They all should use <string> or stop using [string].
