For what it’s worth, ed.texi is a translation of the ed.1 by François Pinard who was not an avid ed(1) user, if I recall correctly. Ed.texi was later updated to incorporate Brian Kernaghan’s original tutorials (with permission), and the update doesn’t appear to suffer from the mentioned formatting errors. Presumably it corrects other errors as well.  It’s available here: <https://github.com/slewsys/ed/tree/master/doc>.

There is also an updated ed.1 written in a more modern (or less obsolete?) dialect of groff  but the macros may have only been distributed with BSD systems(?).  In any case, the above link has two ed.1’s: bsd_ed.1 and gnu_ed.1.
