What platform are you building on?  I've built gdb 5.1.1 many times
on native i686-pc-linux-gnu.  I always build in a build directory that
is different from the source directory.  I have never experienced this
problem.

Can you post the output of "uname -a" on your system, plus the
exact command you use to configure gdb.

Also, gdb 5.2 was released this week, so can you try that instead.
