AIX 6.1 is out of support by the vendor for more than 3 years [1].
But anyway...

No, the issue is not clear. You would need to tell
  1) what you attempted to do, that is, which options and environment variables
     you passed to the configure command,
  2) what were the symptoms, in particular, the last 50 lines of output
     of the "gmake" execution.

Also, there is an AIX-related bug fix in the newest release [2]. So, you might
want to try this release instead.
