bad idea; get gcc 2.95.3, install it somewhere out of the way, or even
over gcc 3, build glibc 2.2.3 (after applying NIS patch) with that, then
rm (or reinstall) gcc 2.95.3. See early/mid-june in the list archives for
why glibc 2.2.3 w/ gcc 3 is a bad idea.
