Hrm.  I didn't see that #error the first time you showed me your
problem.  Perhaps if you added -O to CFLAGS?  Have a look at 
the default value of CFLAGS; you probably nuked a couple
important options when you overrode it.  (Nice packages let you 
override CFLAGS_EXTRA, that way you can't nuke vital options.  
Perhaps glibc is nice in that way.)
