Problems Building glibc-2.3.2

Hi,

This message is in reference to a glibc-2.3.2 build problem I reported, PR
5067, that was closed based on a probable host machine environment problem.
Even though this PR was closed, I have yet to be able build the library,
even after environment variable changes and many configure options tried.

I have been trying to build the library on 2 new stock installs of RedHat 9
and Mandrake 9.1 with almost no OS services running. In each case, the same
problem occurs where running 'make' results in all subdirectories getting
built up to the source subdirectory, ../glibc-2.3.2/string, which apparently
is used to build files in the target directory ../<builddirectory>/bits.
Approximately halfway through the build of this string subdirectory it then
gets into an infinite loop where it keeps re-entering the same directory,
attempting a build over and over, until I break out of it. I have tried the
build both as root and as user and have verified that I have all of the
compilation tools required as indicated in the source INSTALL file.

My main reason for wanting a local build of the library is for application
debug support (I have tried installing glibc-debug rpms and encountered
cyclic dependency problems in RedHat 9 distro).

Is it possible to locally build this version of the glibc library on both of
these OS distributions?

Thanks for any suggestions or help on this.
