  MYOB Better Business
  2005 March Issue

Craig Winkler – CEO, Founder of MYOB
"When you're running a business, it's easy to get bogged down in the detail. This is particularly true of small business, where a few people are performing many tasks – often simultaneously. Small businesses are the great innovators of the economy, and many are discovering new ways to rise above the detail and increase their profitability."

  Building a better business
Systematising your business
Systematising your business is much easier than it sounds. Put simply, it's just a matter of documenting your business processes and then refining them over time. Having a system frees you to focus on building your business, rather than 'living' it, by letting you step back from the day-to-day operations to focus on your key goals. The first step to systematising your business is to ask yourself how you can get your business to work most efficiently and productively without you. Next, ask yourself or your employees   to document the smartest, most productive way to perform each and every procedure. You can always update them as new ideas and better ways of doing business come to the fore. Eventually, you'll create a manual for each process within your business, from how you deal with suppliers to new business development. Remember – keep it simple, user-friendly and to the point. That way, you'll be building a better business and improving your bottom line.

Manager's Tips
Close your week with a planning meeting
With so much to do in any business, effective time management is critical. If your business is systemised, you'll know how much time to allocate to each and every procedure, from finding new customers, to quoting, to holding staff meetings. Why not finish up your working week with a plan for the week ahead? If you have employees, you'll be helping them plan to be productive – and you'll be spending more time working on your business, rather than wasting time in it.
"I seek outside advice and support from a board of advisors – we discuss the health of my business and growth strategies. This keeps me focused and on track."
Amy Lyden – Business Owner, Bow Wow Meow, Bondi Junction, NSW.
2002 National Winner, Telstra Small Business Awards.
