I have upgraded to gmp3.1.1.  It compiled fine, and passed all tests on
"make check" (unlike gmp2, which generated several pages of errors and
core dumped on the mpz tests).  I re-compiled ssh linking to the 3.1.1
libgmp.so, and now that works as well.  So, thank you very much for the
advice.  

I still have no clue as to why gmp2 does not work (why mpz's tests fail
and core dumps) on only one machine.  Gmp2's "make check" works fine on
the other Sun Solaris machines (same OS version, same arch. same patches
and libraries and configurations as far a I could determine); all
tests pass on other machines including mpz.  
So that's still a mystery, but solving the problem was the bigger issue
for us.
