For Emacs, finding the executable requires explicitly following
symlinks one by one and testing other related file names.
If you are thinking of using a gnulib function for this,
we need to check very carefully to make sure it does the right thing
in each and every case.
I think we made this work correctly, some months after pdumping was
added. Did it break since them?
