All I know is in emacs-version "27.1" I first chopped up the *scratch* buffer C-x 2 C-x 3 C-x 2 C-x 3... then did M-x compile, running "date" which finished right away, but none of the *scratch* buffers had anything in their modeline about it anymore at that point.
