I've pushed an improved version of this to the master branch as 259f4613bde. It uses remote 'signal-process' when possible, fixes some bugs, and also reports an error if 'signal-process' fails for some reason (e.g. lack of permissions).
Closing this bug now, but if there's anything still not working, let me know.
