Details:

If one tries to use pspp or psppire with no permission to create files in the
current directory, it quickly crashes.

pspp: error creating "pspp.jnl": Permission denied
pspp: ascii: opening output file "pspp.list": Permission denied

Maybe these should be created elsewhere? or how should it proceed in this
situation.
