Details:

Suppose that AC_CHECK_SIZEOF fails.  If this happens, it does an
unconditional exit from the configure script, and any missing prerequisites up
to that point (e.g. a missing GSL), which may well be the underlying problem,
will not be reported to the user.

Probably we should print out problems as we encounter them, as well as
summarizing at the end of the run.
