Follow-up Comment #8, bug #29872 (project pspp):

The xcalloc() function has this comment:

/* Allocate zeroed memory for N elements of S bytes, with error
   checking.  S must be nonzero.  */

I personally think that this divergence from calloc()'s behavior is
undesirable, but it is at least documented.
