There still seems to be no stdout. Can you try to find out where it is going?
I need the output of the printfs I added in the patch.
For this experiment, can you also
* set your locale to "C"
* show me the syntax you are running.
* make sure the input file is in UTF-8 encoding.

For a file in a non-ascii path:

however on the screen I see not "?berhapt" but "3berhapt". In the
redirected output file, I see the text above.....
