GNU tar and using : in tar name

I have users who have put timestamps in the name
of their tar archives. Example
backup-20001115-11:15.tar

I have tried the vendor supplied tar command on
several platforms and it has no problems creating
or extracting the tar archive.

Since the colon is in filename, GNU tar is
treating the "backup-20001115-11" as a remote host
and "15.tar" as the tar archive filename.

Is there a way to turn off the special meaning of
the colon in GNU tar?
