man 1.5f and cat files

Hi.

I'm using man 1.5f on a Linux RH6.1 box.

It seems that this version of man generates cat files in compressed form
(xrwyz.1.gz), and so checks for this kind of files to check anteriority
between man and cat files.
My problem is that I have man trees with uncompressed cat files
(xrwyz.1) generated by other systems man programs, and that the Linux
man doesn't see them and uses the man page, although the cat file is
newer (and I WANT the cat version...).

I could copy every man page in this tree to a compressed version, but I
don't find this very clean, and I dont find the described behaviour very
compliant with the way man generally works.
Does someone know about a way of solving this problem by telling man to
use uncompressed cat pages? I didn't find any in options, man.config and
so on...

Thanks,
Fred.
