There is an old apha version on ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/grep
2.4.2 code is very reliable/stable.  There were new patches for features
send to this list, take a search engine(dejanews) and look for grep.  Some very
interessting one by P. Eggert and A. Robbins(dfa.c).
