tail -7 -f file doesnt work for no good reason

tail -7 -f file doesnt work for no good reason |

to keep reading whenever the file grows, and to see 7 lines at first,
one must do
tail -n 7 -f /var/log/ppp
because
tail -7 -f /var/log/ppp
doesnt work for no good reason.
yeah I know it's 'old style usage'.
[7 or any other number]
tail 2.0 on mandrake 7.2
